Jonny Bruce is a British gardener and writer who has established himself as one of the most thoughtful and engaging horticulturists of his generation. His first degree was in art history at Cambridge University, followed by a stint at Aberglasney Gardens in Wales and then two years at Great Dixter, in Sussex, where he was the recipient in 2014 of the prestigious Christopher Lloyd Scholarship, training under the renowned Fergus Garrett. Subsequently Jonny worked for four years in the Netherlands at the perennial nursery De Hessenhof. Back in England, Jonny has assisted several high-profile designers including Dan Pearson and Luciano Giubbilei, and he is gardener in charge at the late Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage, situated on the shingle beach at Dungeness in Kent. Jonny is currently in the process of establishing a nursery in the Cotswolds — hence the title of his talk at the ALC: ‘A field full of plants – making the case for new nurseries’.
